Lifestyle Newborn Session Prep Guide
Real life, artfully captured.
Thank you so much for choosing a lifestyle newborn session. These sessions are all about connection, simplicity, and capturing the beauty of your family as you are—no heavy posing, props, or distractions. Just gentle, timeless moments full of love and meaning.
Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your session and make the most of our time together.
What Is a Lifestyle Newborn Session?
A lifestyle session is natural, relaxed, and real. It’s less about perfect poses and more about storytelling—capturing your baby and your family in your home, just as you are.
There will be:
* No elaborate sets or swaddles
* No unnatural props or staging
* No pressure to "perform"
Instead, we’ll focus on:
* Intimate family connection
* Everyday beauty in your own space
* Tiny newborn details you’ll want to remember forever
The goal is to create something that feels authentic and timeless
Session Timing & Flow
Sessions usually last around 45 to 60 minutes, but I always build in an extra 30–40 minute buffer to allow for:
* Feeding or top-ups
* Diaper changes
* Burping and soothing
* Settling baby for sleep
We move at baby’s pace —so there’s no need to stress if things don’t go exactly to plan.
Prepping for a Smooth Session
A few tips to help everything flow with ease:
Feeding & Soothing
* Have pumped milk or formula ready, if that’s part of your plan
* If baby uses a pacifier, keep it handy
* Stick to your usual sleep/soothing routine—babies pick up on change quickly
* Avoid overstimulating baby before the session
For Siblings
* Talk to them gently about what to expect
* Try not to shift their routine too much
* Keep snacks, water, and quiet toys nearby
* Let them know it’s going to be a calm, fun time with lots of cuddles
For Grandparents or Other Family
* Let them know that the session is slow-paced and natural
* Encourage them to just be present, not perform
* Reassure them that it’s okay to feel a bit unsure—this is new for everyone
What to Wear – Parents & Siblings
Your clothing plays a subtle but important role in the look and feel of your photos.
Keep it Simple & Soft
* Choose neutral or earthy tones: creamy whites, soft pastels, gentle greys, warm taupes
* Go for monochrome or tonal palettes to keep the focus on your baby, not your outfit
* Small plaids, delicate florals, or subtle textures are fine—just avoid bold prints, logos, or busy patterns
* Avoid all-black or bright/neon colors. We want the mood to be soft and calm
Consider the Details
* Pressed outfits help photos feel polished
* Barefoot or simple, neutral footwear is ideal
*Don’t forget hair, nails, and light grooming—these details do show up
* Keep makeup natural and fresh, but don’t skip it altogether if it makes you feel your best
What Should Baby Wear?
* Keep baby in soft, simple cotton pieces—nothing too fussy or over-accessorized
* Solid colors or minimal patterns photograph beautifully
* A special outfit or heirloom piece is always welcome
* Bare skin is beautiful too—tiny fingers, toes, and bellies are part of the magic
Your Home – The Perfect Backdrop
We’ll mostly work with natural light in your favorite spots—typically the bedroom, nursery, and living room
To prepare:
* Tidy up just enough to create a calm, uncluttered background
* Neutral throws, soft bedding, and natural textures help enhance the mood
* Open blinds/curtains to let in as much natural light as possible
Meaningful Props & Keepsakes
While I don’t use sets or heavy styling, you're welcome to include a few personal and sentimental items such as:
* Baby’s crib or bassinet
* Nursery name signs or wall art
* A special toy or blanket
* Family heirlooms or baby jewelry (if culturally meaningful)
Important:
If there’s a specific pose or inspiration photo you’d like me to consider, or if you’re planning to incorporate props, please share those with me before the session.
That allows me to let you know if they’ll work with my approach and the available light.
As mentioned earlier, heavily staged or posed photos aren’t really my style—but subtle, meaningful touches are always welcome. Let’s work together to keep it genuine.
What to Expect During the Session
* Sessions are unrushed and follow baby’s lead—feedings, changes, and breaks are all welcome
* I’ll gently guide you into natural, relaxed positions—nothing stiff or overly posed
* Expect snuggles, movement, connection, and those quiet in-between moments that tell your family’s story
A Note on Flexibility & Flow
I always come in with the intention to capture everything I typically aim for—and more, if the moment inspires me.
That said, we’re working with a newborn, and things don’t always go as planned. In those moments, I focus on creating the very best images we can with the time and energy we have.
Every session is unique, but what I promise is:
* My full creative attention
* Sensitivity to your baby’s needs
* A gallery full of meaningful, heartfelt moments
This session is about capturing your family’s real story—not perfection. Let the little things happen—the yawns, the stretches, the quiet sighs. It’s all part of the beauty.
Relax. Be yourselves. Trust the process.
We’ll take care of the rest.
